What Does The Braille Say?

The braille on this dress features a series of empowering phrases which ultimately highlights the impact of Barbie™ and the significance of our braille fashion collaboration.

Alternating from left to right: "original style icon," "changing the world," "inspiring since 1959," "limitless possibilities," "powered by purpose," "fashion is for everyone," "Barbie x Aille Design,"the future is inclusive."

Why You'll Love it:

Inspired by the original 1959 Barbie and her black and white bathing suit, we reimagined the iconic chevron print with a modern silhouette and inclusive braille beadwork. Designed to tell a story about Barbie's journey as the original style icon to now a leader in disability representation and empowerment, this dress is the perfect way to celebrate the Barbie 65th anniversary.

MEET THE MODEL

Mara Lauren Hutchinson

Mara is a legally blind content creator, AMI tv reporter, model, disability advocate, public speaker, fashion influencer, and mother in her early forties. She was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa thirteen years ago, and shortly after was also diagnosed with Usher Syndrome. She exudes confidence and uses her white cane proudly.

With over 30k loyal followers on Instagram, Mara helps others navigate their disability experiences. She is their "Ate Mara". Ate pronounced AH-TEH meaning "elder sister" in Tagalog, a language spoken in the Philippines. She is a big sister and friend for all to lean on.

Mara is an amazing role model and is well known within the blind community for her dedication to disability advocacy, and of course, her notable sense of style.

What does this experience mean to you?

“I feel like I'm a powerful, confident woman. I look in the mirror and I always say ‘you are it”. That’s my line in my forties now where I look at myself, feeling so confident in everything I put on. Not because of how good I look, but it's the woman I am. I've come so far in life where anything I put on just makes me even more confident and beautiful. And it's because of the struggles. The many things that I have to face… Fashion is just an extra type of bonus to make me feel even more beautiful.”

- Mara Lauren Hutchinson, Barbie x Aille model
